The rooms
The rooms are contemporary and clean-lined; the deluxe rooms carry seasonal scenes painted on the headboard and windows that open to the air. The Heritage Garden rooms, suites and residences look over Shakusui-en, some with a balcony, and the Kyoto Residence of two bedrooms has two balconies, a dining room for six and floor-to-ceiling views over the city. The Presidential Suite sits on the fourth floor beneath tall ceilings, dressed in regional craft.

The pool and the spa
The spa spans two floors, lit by latticed lanterns, with a 20-metre indoor pool, a large whirlpool, a steam bath and a fitness centre. Seven treatment rooms offer shiatsu, full-body massage and a bamboo ritual of warm oil and bamboo rods. The hotel has no onsen.
the table
Dining
Three dining rooms open onto the pond garden: a ten-seat counter for Edomae sushi in cypress four centuries old, served on Bizen and Kiyomizu ware; a grill for dry-aged wagyu and seafood over charcoal, with a terrace on the water; and a cocktail bar in the spirit of an izakaya, pouring Kyoto spirits and Japanese whisky. Across the glass bridge, the tea house serves matcha by day and Kyoto sake on the terrace at evening.
the setting
Kyoto
The hotel stands at the foot of the hills in the temple district of Higashiyama, reached by the slope of Onna-zaka from Higashioji Street. Its garden rooms and its dining rooms look over Shakusui-en, a circuit pond garden of some 10,000 square metres, and the hotel keeps Japanese painting, Kiyomizu pottery and washi paper art throughout.
Sanjusangen-do, the Kyoto National Museum and Myoho-in are a walk away, and Kiyomizu-dera, Tofuku-ji and Gion are each a short drive.
