Sapporo

Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido, a city of almost two million people laid out on a grid in the 1870s, with Odori Park running a kilometre and a half through its centre.

the place

The northern capital, a sculptor's landscape and the great counters of the island.

The grid still reads clearly: the clock tower of 1878 two blocks from the park, the red-brick former government office of 1888, and on the city's north-east edge Moerenuma Park, the only landscape the sculptor Isamu Noguchi completed, a park of hills, fountains and geometry laid over a reclaimed site.

Sapporo is where our Hokkaido journeys close. The Summer Tour of Hokkaido gives it two nights and the Cherry Blossom Tour of Hokkaido three, both at the Sapporo Grand Hotel, on the executive floor, and Pure Hokkaido, in The Private Collection, ends with two nights there on the dates you choose.

what we do here

Sapporo, as we show it

  1. Odori Park

The green avenue that divides the city into north and south, with the television tower at its eastern end.

  2. Moerenuma Park

Noguchi's landscape of grass pyramids, a sea fountain and a glass pyramid, read whole from the summit of Moere-yama.

  3. The red-brick former Hokkaido Government Office with its green dome, snow on the trees before it

  4. Hokkaido Jingu

The founding shrine of the city, in the woods of Maruyama Park.

  5. Nijo Market

Crab, salmon roe and sea urchin, walked and eaten as you go.

  6. The counters

A farewell at one of Sapporo's tempura or sushi counters, the chef working in front of you.
