the place

A town of seven bathhouses, crossed in yukata and geta.

The town has bathed for some thirteen hundred years. Its ryokan lend every guest a yukata, wooden geta and a pass to the bathhouses, and in the evening the lanes along the canal fill with the sound of geta on stone.

We give Kinosaki two nights, at Nishimuraya Honkan, a historic wooden ryokan over the canal, or at its sister, Nishimuraya Hotel Shogetsutei: on The Classic Cherry Blossom Tour of Japan, the Autumn Leaves Tour of Japan and the Classic and Definitive journeys of The Private Collection.

what we do here

Kinosaki Onsen, as we show it

  1. The seven bathhouses

From Satono-yu beside the station to Kono-yu, the oldest, each with its own building and its own legend.

  2. The willow canal

Stone bridges and willows along the Otani River, lit after dark.

  3. Nishimuraya Honkan

A ryokan of the Edo era over the canal, its rooms opening onto their own gardens.

  4. The table

Tajima beef and crab from the Japan Sea at the kaiseki table.

  5. Onsenji

The ropeway up Mount Daishi to the temple of Onsenji and the view over the town to the sea.
