the place
Moss, cedar and rain, on an island that is all mountain.
The island rises from the sea to Mount Miyanoura, at 1,936 metres the highest peak in Kyushu, and the rain that falls on it feeds a forest where cedars more than a thousand years old grow among granite boulders deep in moss. At Shiratani Unsuikyo the paths run beside clear streams through that forest, and on the coast Toroki Falls drops through its gorge into the sea.
We plan Yakushima as a Custom Tour of Japan, created around your party alone, often with Kagoshima and the onsen of southern Kyushu. If you would rather travel independently, the Expert Japan Itinerary plans the days for you.
