the place

The far north of Honshu, beech forest and a lake in a crater.

The Hakkoda mountains rise at its centre, their beech forest running down to the Oirase gorge and the caldera of Lake Towada, and in the west the Shirakami-Sanchi forest, a World Natural Heritage Site, is one of the last great stands of virgin beech in East Asia. Hirosaki keeps its castle keep of 1810 in a park of moats and gates, and outside Aomori city the Jomon settlement of Sannai-Maruyama, some five thousand years old, is part of a World Heritage Site of its own.

The Autumn Leaves Tour of Northern Japan crosses to Aomori by the Shinkansen beneath the Tsugaru Strait and gives it two nights at Tsuta Onsen, a wooden inn in the beech forest whose main onsen is built over its own spring. The Custom Tour of Japan can bring any of the prefecture into a journey created around your party alone.

what we do here

Aomori, as we show it

  1. Oirase and Lake Towada

Fourteen kilometres of stream, waterfall and moss, and the deep blue caldera at its head.

  2. Tsuta-numa

A still pond in the beech forest, the trees mirrored whole in it.

  3. The deep blue water of Lake Towada seen from a height, forested headlands reaching into it
    Lake Towada from above
  4. Hirosaki

The castle keep above its moats, and the old samurai quarter around it.

  5. Sannai-Maruyama

A Jomon settlement some five thousand years old, its great timber posts raised again.

  6. Apples

Aomori grows more of Japan's apples than anywhere else, and they come to the table in every form.
