the place

A round lake in a volcano's crater, islands at its centre.

The lake and the volcanoes around it are a UNESCO Global Geopark. Mount Usu is reached by ropeway for the whole caldera below, and beside it stands Showa-Shinzan, the small red mountain that rose from a farmer's wheat field in the 1940s. On a clear day Mount Yotei stands to the north.

The Cherry Blossom Tour of Hokkaido gives Lake Toya two nights at Hikari no Uta, a hillside ryokan with the lake spread below, and a private boat on the caldera. The Summer Tour of Hokkaido spends a night at Konosumika, whose lake-facing suites have their own open-air onsen, and in the evening fireworks go up over the water.
