Kamakura
Kamakura is a seaside town about an hour south of Tokyo that was the seat of Japan's first shogunate, from 1185 to 1333, and keeps its temples in the wooded hills behind the bay.

The shogun's town, a bronze Buddha and temples in the green hills.
The Great Buddha of Kotoku-in, cast in bronze in the thirteenth century and over eleven metres tall, has sat in the open air for more than five hundred years. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu stands at the head of the town's long avenue, and in the valleys around it the great Zen temples of the Kamakura shoguns, Kencho-ji and Engaku-ji among them, keep their gardens.
