Nagasaki

Nagasaki is a harbour city on the west coast of Kyushu that was, for more than two centuries, Japan's only window on the West.

the place

A harbour city between hills, the West's one door into Japan.

From 1641 the Dutch traded from Dejima, a small fan-shaped island in the harbour, now rebuilt, and Chinese merchants from their own quarter. When the port opened, Scottish merchants built on the hill above, and Glover Garden keeps their houses, among them the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan, beside Oura Church, a World Heritage Site with the hidden Christian sites of the region. The Peace Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum stand to the north of the city, met with the quiet they deserve.

From the summit of Mount Inasa the harbour is seen whole after dark, and a boat carries you out to Hashima, the island of concrete called Gunkanjima. We plan Nagasaki as a Custom Tour of Japan, created around your party alone. If you would rather travel independently, the Expert Japan Itinerary plans the days for you.
