Kurokawa Onsen is a hot-spring village of some thirty ryokan along a forested river in Kumamoto, in the mountains north of the Aso caldera.

Ryokan along a river in the forest, and a pass to their springs.
The village agreed long ago to keep its look of timber, stone and trees: no neon, no billboards, the inns built low along the Tanoharu River and screened by planting. A wooden pass, the nyuto tegata, opens three of the inns' open-air onsen to you, and the evening is spent walking between them in yukata, the lanterns lit along the river.
To the south lies Aso, among the largest calderas in the world, its grasslands and the crater of Nakadake a short drive away.
