Kanazawa

Kanazawa is the old castle town of the Maeda lords, near the Japan Sea coast, a city the war left untouched, its teahouse and samurai quarters intact.

the place

Gold leaf, garden and lacquer, in a castle town the war never touched.

The Maeda clan ruled the province of Kaga from here for nearly three centuries and spent their wealth on craft and gardens. Kenrokuen, laid out beside the castle, is counted among the three great gardens of Japan, and the city still makes almost all of the country's gold leaf.

We stay at Hakuchoro Sanraku, beside Kenrokuen, on the Autumn Leaves Tour of Japan, the night before the onsen of Kaga. Kanazawa is about two and a half hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen, and it sits easily in a Custom Tour of Japan.
