The rooms

The 25 rooms lie in low guest pavilions along the river, each for one to three guests, their windows framing the gorge, the interiors made by the hands of Kyoto artisans.

The spa

Shiatsu is given in the room to ease the tiredness of travel, and each morning there is meditation in a temple hall and stretching in the open air by the river.

Dining

The dining room serves Japanese cuisine that keeps its traditions and takes in ingredients and techniques from further afield, with Kyoto dishes à la carte. Shabu-shabu of beef and yuba can be served in the room, and breakfast comes to the room too, with the vegetables of the season in a clear broth and Mount Arashiyama at the window. Matcha is made aboard the resort's own boat, and a cocktail is served by the water on moonlit evenings.

the setting

Kyoto

The resort stands upstream of the Togetsukyo bridge, on the Oi River, where the water runs through a wooded gorge below Mount Arashiyama, the hills the Kyoto nobility once came to for their scenery. The grounds contain a dry landscape garden for meditation, a maple of some four centuries beneath which aperitifs are served, and the old storehouse, and the river is heard from every room.

The resort's boat waits on the river, and downstream lie the bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji and the lanes of Arashiyama.
