Biei

Biei is a town of rolling farmland in central Hokkaido, between Asahikawa and Furano, whose hills are planted in a patchwork of crops beneath the Tokachi mountains.

the place

Patchwork hills, a blue pond, and the forest outside the glass.

The fields change colour from hill to hill, wheat and potato and buckwheat in long curving strips, with single trees and stands of larch standing on the crests. In the hills to the south-east lies Shirogane's Blue Pond, its water coloured by the minerals of the springs, dead larches standing in it.

We stay in the forest, at Mori no Ryotei Biei, where every room has its own open-air onsen and the woods come close outside the glass. The Summer Tour of Hokkaido opens here with two nights, and gives a day to the lavender of Furano, half an hour away.
