the place
Gold leaf and carving in a forest of cedar, and a lake above the falls.
The Shrines and Temples of Nikko are a World Heritage Site. Toshogu, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is carved and lacquered and gilded over every surface, the three monkeys and the sleeping cat among them, and at the town's edge the vermilion Shinkyo bridge crosses the Daiya River. Above the town, the road climbs to Lake Chuzenji, where Kegon Falls drops almost a hundred metres from the lake's outlet.
We plan Nikko as a Custom Tour of Japan, created around your party alone, often as a night out of Tokyo. If you would rather travel independently, the Expert Japan Itinerary plans the days for you.

questions
Questions about Nikko
How far is Nikko from Tokyo?
About two hours by limited express train from Asakusa, or by private car.
Is Nikko a day trip or an overnight stay?
It can be either. A night at Lake Chuzenji gives the shrines one day and the lake and falls another, and the Custom Tour of Japan can plan it either way.
Can you plan a private journey to Nikko?
Yes. The Custom Tour of Japan is created around your party alone, on your dates. If you would rather travel independently, the Expert Japan Itinerary plans the days for you.
