Japan, and nothing else

The Luxury Japan Travel Story

For a thousand years a family has been known by its kamon, a single crest with the whole of a house within it, dyed into the curtain at the door, lacquered onto the boxes carried between houses, set into the roof tiles, and worn in five places on formal silk. A house of any standing never announced itself; it was simply recognised, and to be known by your mark before your name remains the oldest luxury Japan possesses.

A kamon is drawn out of geometry rather than invention. The monshō-uwaeshi, of whom almost none remain, works with a bamboo compass, a straightedge and a brush of a few hairs, laying circle upon circle and arc against arc until an unseen structure decides where every line must fall, and when the work is finished the geometry has vanished entirely and all that remains to the eye is a blossom.

Ours is a five-fold sakura, a cherry blossom, drawn in exactly that manner, by that hand, in that craft. A house here is known by its mark, and we are known by ours.

A kamon of this kind carries an obligation, and ours is to the culture and the traditions Japan is made of, kept not as ornament but as a discipline that decides who we work with, what we place before our guests, and the standards we hold ourselves to.

The beauty of Japan lies on the surface, and the reason for it does not. Japan explains itself to nobody, and it is known the way a house is known, from within, by those who have long lived inside it. Japan cannot be seen. Japan must be discovered, and we are the ones who can show it to you.

A singular intent

Luxury Japan Travel, now in its second decade, has become the choice of discerning travellers, having pioneered journeys to many of Japan's unknown areas and regions. We were the first to offer luxury tours of Hokkaido, long before it was known to the outside world.

A journey with Luxury Japan Travel begins from a singular and original intent: to provide a level of service and experience that is peerless in every way.

Time with Luxury Japan Travel

Time with Luxury Japan Travel is akin to being received into a private house where only a few guests are ever welcomed. Our journeys are composed slowly by our experts in Kyoto, the shape of each one true to its season and to the places through which it moves. Rooms, tables, hours and roads are chosen with a discretion that stays invisible to you, and every journey unfolds with a simplicity and an ease that give an immediate sense of belonging.

What a guest notices first is calm. It is in the pause before a sliding door is opened, in an evening allowed to find its own length, in the certainty that every hour has been considered by someone who knew why it mattered. Guests feel it within the first day, and it does not lift until after the last.

Our people carry that spirit in everything they do. Your Tour Director knows Japan the way one knows home, and stands beside you from the first morning to the last evening; behind them, our team in Kyoto, and behind the team, the innkeepers, makers, and masters of their crafts who receive our guests, and whom we receive in return. We place our guests at the centre of all that we do, and we build their days so that the everyday falls away.

Most guests hear of us from other guests. Where they have written of us publicly, every review, without exception, is five stars.

Our journeys

Luxury Japan Travel today offers published tours across Honshu and Hokkaido, each of eight guests and no more; a Custom Tour of Japan, composed for a single party alone; and an Expert Japan Itinerary, written for those who travel by themselves. Every one of them is planned, organised, and run by us.

The tours follow the seasons they are made for: cherry blossom in the spring, Hokkaido in the summer, and the autumn leaves as the maples turn, from the mountains of the north to the gardens of Kyoto. Each exists for its season alone, and each is the work of the year before it.

You book directly with Luxury Japan Travel and you travel with Luxury Japan Travel, under booking terms set out plainly before any payment is made. In Japan, whatever the day requires is already in our hands.
