Shiretoko

Shiretoko is a peninsula at the north-eastern tip of Hokkaido, reaching into the Sea of Okhotsk, inscribed as a World Natural Heritage Site in 2005 for the way its forest comes down unbroken to the sea.

the place

A coast with no road, read from the calm of a boat.

Its eastern shore has no road and no settlement, and the deep strait draws cold-water life up to a coast of basalt cliffs, where waterfalls such as Kashuni drop straight into the sea and brown bears walk the tideline. Inland, the Five Lakes lie in the forest beneath the mountains, reached on an elevated boardwalk.

The Wild North Tour of Hokkaido gives Shiretoko three nights on the Okhotsk coast at Utoro, at Kitakobushi Shiretoko, whose rooms face the sea, each with a private open-air onsen. One full day goes up the roadless coast by boat.
