the place

Seven springs in the beech forest, at the end of the road.

The springs differ from inn to inn, milky white, clear or iron-brown, and a pass lets you walk between them. Tsurunoyu, the most storied, keeps its thatched and timber bathhouses around an open-air onsen of milky water among the beeches. On the road up lies Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan, its water a deep clear blue.

We stay at Taenoyu, where two waters meet, and the Autumn Leaves Tour of Northern Japan gives it two nights, with a full day of relaxation to move between the village's springs or simply stay by the waterfall outside.
