Okinawa Island

Okinawa Island is the largest of Japan's Southern Islands, about two and a half hours by air from Tokyo, and was the heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled these islands for four and a half centuries.

the place

The castles of the Ryukyu kings, and a coast of coral and pale water.

The kingdom's castles, the gusuku, stand on their hills in curving walls of limestone, and with Shuri in Naha and the royal mausoleum of Tamaudun they are a World Heritage Site. North of the capital the coast turns to coral: the cliff of Cape Manzamo above the sea, the long bridge to Kouri over pale water, and on the Motobu Peninsula the castle ruins of Nakijin and the great tank of the Churaumi Aquarium.

We plan Okinawa Island as a Custom Tour of Japan, created around your party alone, with Naha and the Kerama Islands, or Miyakojima and Ishigakijima further south. If you would rather travel independently, the Expert Japan Itinerary plans the days for you.
