the place

A steaming valley above the town, and nine kinds of water below it.

Boardwalks lead into Jigokudani, a crater of steaming vents and pale mineral rock above the town, and further up the hill Oyunuma, a crater pond of grey-green water, steams between the trees. Half an hour away, on the shore of Lake Poroto, Upopoy, the National Ainu Museum and Park, keeps the embroidery, carving and song of the island's first people.

We stay at Takinoya, at the centre of the town, whose onsen draw on the springs of the valley above it, with private kaiseki dining. The Summer Tour of Hokkaido, the Cherry Blossom Tour of Hokkaido and Pure Hokkaido, in The Private Collection, each give it two nights, and the Wild North Tour of Hokkaido stays here on its journey across the island.
