Lake Kawaguchiko
Lake Kawaguchiko is one of the Fuji Five Lakes, at the northern foot of Mount Fuji, and from its north shore the whole cone of the mountain stands across the water.

the place
Two nights with the mountain in front of you.
The lake lies at about 830 metres, in a country of old forest and spring water, and the villages around it have looked to the mountain for centuries: Oshino and its spring-fed ponds, the shrines where the old pilgrim trails to the summit begin.
We give it two nights. On The Classic Cherry Blossom Tour of Japan we stay at FUFU Kawaguchiko, in a suite with its own open-air onsen facing the mountain; on Definitive Japan, in The Private Collection, at Hotel Kaneyamaen or Konansou.

Reading on Lake Kawaguchiko
- The Room with Its Own Onsen: near Mount FujiNear the Fuji Five Lakes, a private onsen room is less about comfort than about waiting: hot water, cold air, and a mountain that is visible only when it chooses to be.
- Mount Fuji and the Cherry BlossomAt the Fuji Five Lakes the cherry blossom opens weeks after Tokyo's has fallen, late enough that snow still holds the mountain's upper third while the flower opens below it.
