the place
Dark timber, cedar balls over the brewery doors, and the mountains all around.
The town grew rich on timber and craft, and its carpenters were sent to build the temples of the capitals. In Sanmachi the latticed fronts of the old merchant houses line the lanes, and a ball of cedar hung over a door means the brewery inside is pressing new sake. The Takayama Jinya, the old government office of the Tokugawa, still stands by the river.
We plan Takayama as a Custom Tour of Japan, created around your party alone, often with Shirakawa-go, under an hour away, and Kanazawa beyond. If you would rather travel independently, the Expert Japan Itinerary plans the days for you.
