Ryokan, Nakagyo, Kyoto
Hiiragiya
Hiiragiya is a ryokan on Fuyacho Street in Nakagyo, in the centre of Kyoto, kept by the same family since 1818. Rooms in the Main Building retain the traditional sukiya-zukuri style of architecture, while the New Wing offers contemporary Japanese spaces that incorporate natural materials and traditional craftsmanship into modern designs.
Stay at Hiiragiya on a Custom Tour of Japan, created around your party alone, on the dates you choose.
the room
The rooms
Each room is finished in its own way with the crafts of Kyoto. Among them are polished Kitayama cedar, ceilings of Yakusugi wood, earth walls polished in the Otsu manner, gold-leaf screens, hand-carved transoms and stained glass of Kyoto scenes. The largest room, at 97 square metres, joins two tatami rooms. The new wing of 2006 carries the same crafts into newer rooms, with details such as floors of ancient buried cedar, a lacquered alcove inlaid with jewel beetle wings, and small courtyard gardens.

The bath
Every room has its own bath of koyamaki, the Japanese umbrella pine. Two further baths may be reserved: one with stained glass and porcelain tiles by a Kyoto potter, the other with lacquered walls and ceiling. Every bath is filled not from a hot spring but from the ryokan's own underground water.
the table
Dining
Dinner is Kyo-kaiseki of Kyoto ingredients, served on the ryokan's treasured tableware, following the season. Breakfast is yudofu, the simmered tofu of Kyoto, with grilled fish, rice cooked in an earthenware pot and the ryokan's own pickles, and a Western breakfast can be served on request.
the setting
Kyoto
The ryokan stands on Fuyacho Street at Anekoji in Nakagyo, the old merchant centre of Kyoto, a few streets from the Kamo River. It takes its name from the holly of Hiiragi Shrine in the precinct of Shimogamo, a tree believed to ward off harm, and the family who keep it opened it as an inn in 1861.
Nishiki Market lies a short walk to the south, the park of the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the north, and the Kamo River and Pontocho to the east.
