A hillside of steam, and springs in every colour.
Steam rises from vents all across the hillside of Kannawa, the old onsen quarter, and its pillars of white over the roofs are a protected landscape. The jigoku, the hells, are springs too hot to bathe in and shown for their colours: the cobalt blue of Umi Jigoku, the red of Chinoike Jigoku, the bubbling grey mud of Oniishibozu. Food is steamed over the vents, and by the bay you can lie buried in sand warmed by the springs.
