the place

A city of towers, with a palace garden at its heart.

The Imperial Palace stands at the centre, its moats and stone walls the remains of Edo Castle, and around it the city keeps its quarters: Asakusa and the old temple of Senso-ji, the forest of Meiji Jingu, the galleries and department stores of Ginza.

Tokyo opens every Honshu journey we make. We stay at Palace Hotel Tokyo, above the palace moat, on The Classic Cherry Blossom Tour of Japan and the Autumn Leaves Tour of Japan; the journeys of The Private Collection stay at Mitsui Garden Hotel Nihonbashi Premier, in the old merchant quarter of Nihonbashi.

what we do here

Tokyo, as we show it

  1. Senso-ji

The city's oldest temple, reached through the Kaminarimon gate and the lane of shops at Nakamise, its great lanterns lit after dark.

  2. Meiji Jingu

The shrine to the Emperor Meiji, a gravel path through a forest planted by hand in the middle of the city.

  3. The double-arched stone bridge of Nijubashi reflected in the Imperial Palace moat, a watchtower above
    Nijubashi, the Imperial Palace
  4. The Imperial Palace East Gardens

The old castle grounds, open to visitors, the stone foundations of the keep standing among the lawns.

  5. Shibuya Crossing

The crossing where the lights change and the whole city seems to step out at once.

  6. The Tsukiji Outer Market

The market streets that grew up beside the old fish market, for tamagoyaki, knives and fresh tuna.

  7. Ginza

The quarter of department stores, galleries and kimono houses, at its most graceful after dark.

Rooms above the palace moat, where the cherry trees along the ancient stone walls come into full flower in the last days of March.

On The Classic Cherry Blossom Tour of Japan and The Autumn Leaves Tour of Japan

  • Mitsui Garden Hotel Nihonbashi Premier

Mitsui Garden Hotel Nihonbashi Premier stands in Nihonbashi, the quarter where the Mitsui family opened its first kimono shop in 1673, a few minutes on foot from the bridge from which the roads of Japan are still measured.
