A shrine built over the water, and a gate standing in the sea.
Itsukushima Shrine and its torii are a World Heritage Site. The shrine's halls stand on piers over the bay, and at high water the torii appears to float; at low water you can walk out to it across the sand. Behind the shrine the forest rises into Momijidani, the valley of maples, and a ropeway carries you up Mount Misen for the islands of the Inland Sea.
