Hokkaido is Japan's northern island and a fifth of its land. It holds six of the country's national parks, among them Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Lake Shikotsu, the clearest lake in Japan; onsen towns such as Noboribetsu, whose waters rise from Hell Valley; and the world of the Ainu, its indigenous people, whose national museum, Upopoy, stands at Shiraoi. Our tours stay at the ryokan and lakeside resorts that make the island's distances a pleasure, with a private vehicle between every one.

questions

Hokkaido tours, your questions answered

Which Hokkaido tour should we choose?

The Hokkaido cherry blossom tour follows the northern blossom from Matsumae to Sapporo. The Summer Tour of Hokkaido takes the flower fields of Biei and Furano, the lakes and Otaru. The Wild North Tour of Hokkaido goes east, to Shiretoko and Lake Akan. The Autumn Leaves Tour of Northern Japan opens at Jozankei and Hakodate before crossing to Tohoku. Pure Hokkaido is the private choice, on your own dates.

How many days is enough for Hokkaido?

Nine days take in the south-west of the island well: Pure Hokkaido spends two nights each in Hakodate, Noboribetsu, Otaru and Sapporo. Our published Hokkaido tours run eleven to thirteen days, which allows the lakes and the onsen towns at an easy pace and, on the Wild North, the far east of the island at Shiretoko and Lake Akan.

Is Hokkaido worth visiting?

Yes. It holds six of Japan's national parks, Lake Shikotsu, the clearest lake in the country, onsen towns such as Noboribetsu, the culture of the Ainu at Upopoy, and a table the rest of Japan looks north to, from the crab and sea urchin of its coasts to the dairy of Tokachi. It is another Japan from Tokyo and Kyoto: wide, green and quiet, with distances that a private vehicle turns into the pleasure of the day.

How much does a trip to Hokkaido cost?

Our published Hokkaido tours are USD $18,500 per person for the Cherry Blossom and Summer tours, USD $21,500 for the Wild North and USD $19,500 for the Autumn Leaves Tour of Northern Japan, twin share and all-inclusive. Pure Hokkaido, private on your own dates, is USD $21,600 per person, two sharing a room. What a luxury journey in Japan costs more widely is in our guide to what a luxury Japan tour costs.

How many guests travel on a published tour?

Limited to 8 guests, a truly small group tour. Every guest is eighteen or over, and every place is twin share. Pure Hokkaido is for one to four guests, travelling privately.

Do you arrange the flights to Hokkaido?

You book your flights, and we advise on them. The Cherry Blossom Tour of Hokkaido arrives at Hakodate and leaves from New Chitose; the Wild North arrives at Asahikawa and leaves from New Chitose; on Pure Hokkaido you fly to Hakodate or to Sapporo, and we advise on the choice for your dates.

Can we ski in Hokkaido with you?

Yes. We create private ski journeys in Niseko through the Custom Tour of Japan, and on Honshu in Hakuba and Myoko, each planned around your party alone.
