The two tours meet the blossom in two different Japans. The Classic takes the old heart of the country: the cherry along the Imperial Palace moat in Tokyo, two nights beneath Mount Fuji, Kyoto, and the willow-lined canal of Kinosaki Onsen. The Hokkaido tour opens at Matsumae, the northernmost castle town in Japan, where some two hundred and fifty varieties of cherry grow around the castle, and closes in the gardens of Sapporo. Hanami, the custom of sitting beneath the blossom, is kept twice on each: a picnic laid under the trees, the way the court kept it a thousand years ago.
