The onsen
The seventh floor has an observation onsen behind forty metres of glass and an open-air onsen facing the cliffs; on the second floor a dim, steaming onsen draws a spring of 74 degrees piped from its source a kilometre away, a simple water rich in metasilicic acid, with a sauna beside it.
the table
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki cooked over charcoal and the hearth in a dining room on the ground floor, with a second room, built like a mountain tea house, for the produce of northern Hokkaido; the lounge pours a welcome of Hokkaido sake.
the setting
Sounkyo
Sounkyo is a gorge of sheer cliffs of columnar rock on the upper Ishikari River, at the north-eastern edge of Daisetsuzan, the largest national park in Japan. The hotel stands in the quiet of the onsen village, among the cliffs, where the night sky is dark enough for the stars.
The hotel stands in the onsen village of Sounkyo, with the ropeway up Kurodake at the head of the village, the twin falls of Ginga and Ryusei down the gorge and the cliffs of Obako upstream.
