ryokan, Ginzan Onsen

Fujiya

Fujiya is a ryokan of eight rooms at Ginzan Onsen, the gas-lit onsen village in the mountains of Yamagata, its Taisho-era facade kept on the river and its interior rebuilt in bamboo lattice and glass, and the last two nights of The Autumn Leaves Tour of Northern Japan.

Why stay at Fujiya

  1. Eight rooms

A house so small that the whole of it feels like your own.

  2. Old front, new heart

A Taisho facade on the river, and inside, screens of fine bamboo lattice filtering the light.

  3. The village by lamplight

Ginzan's wooden inns line the river beneath gas lamps, lit as the valley grows quiet.

the setting

An old wooden front, and behind it, light through bamboo.

Ginzan Onsen grew up beside a silver mine in a narrow valley of Yamagata, and its three- and four-storey wooden inns of the Taisho era still face each other across the river, lit by gas lamps after dark. Fujiya stands among them.

At the door: the river and its bridges, the lamplit street, and the Shirogane Falls a short walk up the valley.

the rooms

The rooms and suites

The rooms are spare and luminous, in pale wood, plaster and bamboo, with low beds and river windows; light falls through the lattice by day and the lamps of the street glow through it at night.

The onsen

The ryokan's onsen are small private baths in wood and stone, each its own quiet room, taken in turn.

Dining

Dinner is kaiseki of the Yamagata mountains and rice country, served at the ryokan; on our tours the last evening is a farewell kaiseki here.
