The rooms

The rooms come in five types. The Momiji-kan stands on the stream, its rooms renewed in 2020 and 2021 in a style both modern and nostalgic, and its special room, of sixteen tatami, is the largest in the ryokan; the Sakura-kan keeps Japanese rooms with a view of the river, and there are rooms with twin beds besides.

The onsen

The Silver water is a simple spring, clear, neutral, soft and warming; the Gold is a magnesium and calcium sulfate spring, cloudy and lightly acidic, with traces of iron and sulfur. Between them they fill eight onsen, indoors and in the open air, among them an onsen of rock and one for lying back in, all with water flowing straight from the source, and a private open-air onsen over the river.

Dining

Dinner is the cooking of Akita, served one dish at a time in a dining room over the stream or at tables of folk-craft furniture, with a choice of main course. Kiritanpo, rice pressed onto a skewer and grilled at the irori, is simmered in a broth of Hinai chicken. On The Autumn Leaves Tour of Northern Japan both evenings' dinners here are included in the journey.

the setting

Nyuto Onsen

Nyuto Onsen-kyo is a village of small onsen inns at the end of the road into the beech forest, inside the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Taenoyu opened here in 1952, on a spot where hot water was found rising from the forest, in the days when the town lay half a day away on foot.

A mountain stream runs below the rooms through the beech forest, and the other springs of Nyuto Onsen-kyo lie along the road.
