The rooms

The thirty rooms are Japanese rooms in tatami and Japanese and Western rooms with beds, their windows onto the forest of the valley or the garden; two corner rooms keep a fireplace in the living room. Twelve carry an open-air onsen fed straight from the source: ten beside a wooden deck, and two Japanese rooms of 92 square metres, each with a dining room of its own served through a second door.

The onsen

The ryokan draws four kinds of spring water from the veins of Jigokudani. On the top floor an onsen of salt and iron water looks out over the trees of the valley; below ground a second onsen of radium and sulphur water opens onto a garden, with a sauna beside it. A treatment salon and a lounge with a wood fire, its tall windows on the Japanese garden, complete the ryokan.

Dining

Dinner is a kaiseki of the sea and the mountains of Noboribetsu, served like breakfast in private dining rooms over the Japanese garden; on our tours dinner is kaiseki in a private room at the ryokan. A counter bar faces the garden after dinner.

the setting

Noboribetsu

Noboribetsu Onsen lies in a wooded valley of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park below Jigokudani, the steaming crater that feeds the springs of the town. Takinoya stands across the Kusurisanbetsu River from the onsen street, reached by its own footbridge over water that runs warm from the source, and an onko yew, the tree the Ainu revered, stands at the entrance to its Japanese garden.

Across the footbridge lies the onsen street of the town, the boardwalks of Jigokudani rise above it, and Upopoy, the National Ainu Museum and Park, is half an hour away at Shiraoi.
