Ryokan, Oirase and Towada
Tsuta Onsen
Tsuta Onsen is a ryokan in the beech forest of Towada, Aomori, fifteen minutes from the Oirase Gorge, its wooden main building of 1918 still the entrance, and its onsen built over its own spring so that the water rises through the floor of the tub.
The Autumn Leaves Tour of Northern Japan stays here. $19,500 per person, twin share.
the room
The rooms
The rooms of the 1918 main building are Japanese, in tatami of six to eleven mats, and its special room spreads over two rooms of ten and eight mats. The west wing has special rooms of about 65 square metres and Japanese-modern twin rooms, and in the forest stand three detached suites for two to four guests, each with a semi-open-air onsen of flowing spring water.
to unwind
The onsen
The spring is a neutral sodium, calcium, sulfate, bicarbonate and chloride water, 45.4 degrees at the source, flowing up of its own accord. In the older bathhouse, rebuilt in 1990 in its old form, it rises through the floor of the tub; the second bathhouse, named for the sound of the spring, climbs to a ceiling twelve metres high. A private onsen can be reserved at the ryokan.
the table
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki of the fish and vegetables of Aomori, served in the ryokan's restaurant, and breakfast is laid with the produce of the region. On The Autumn Leaves Tour of Northern Japan both evenings here are kaiseki dinners, included in the journey.
the setting
Oirase and Towada
The ryokan stands alone in a forest of beech in the Towada country of Aomori, between the Oirase Gorge and the Hakkoda mountains. A gentle, well-made path leads from the door into the woods and round the Tsuta ponds, the largest of which, Tsuta-numa, mirrors the forest in its still water.
A walk through the beech forest leads from the ryokan to the Tsuta ponds, the Oirase Gorge is fifteen minutes by car, and Lake Towada about forty-five.
