The rooms

The rooms are mostly Japanese and Western, of 55 to 64 square metres, turned to the forest of the lake. The largest suite runs to over a hundred square metres with an open-air onsen and a kitchen; the Japanese and Western rooms with an open-air onsen add a garden of their own around the water.

The onsen and the spa

The shared onsen draws the soft hydrogen carbonate spring of Shikotsu into an open-air pool and indoor pools to stand, lie or sit in, with a Finnish sauna beside; the treatment spa offers facials, body treatments and massage, in its own rooms or in the guest's.

Dining

Dinner is kaiseki of the lake and the mountains, served in a quiet dining room, and a second restaurant cooks creatively around the produce of Lake Shikotsu; on our tours dinner is the kaiseki.

the setting

Lake Shikotsu

Lake Shikotsu fills a deep caldera south of Sapporo, ringed by forest and the volcanoes of Tarumae, Fuppushi and Eniwa. The resort stands in the small onsen village of Shikotsu Kohan, built around water as its theme, with a welcome lounge and an earthen-floored gallery, and the art of the Ainu in its gardens and halls.

The lakeshore of Shikotsu Kohan is steps away, with the red iron Yamasen bridge over the Chitose River, boats out onto the clear water and forest walks into the national park.
