Why stay at Nishimuraya Honkan
Seven bathhouses on foot
Kinosaki's seven public onsen line the willow canal, and guests walk between them in yukata and wooden geta.
A garden at the centre
The tatami rooms open onto a garden of pines, moss and stone lanterns, lit after dark.
A house of seven generations
One family has kept the ryokan through seven generations, and the wooden rooms carry the craft of each.
the setting
A wooden house on a garden, in a town built for walking between onsen.
Kinosaki is a small town of willows, stone bridges and wooden inns along a canal, where the street is the corridor between onsen. Nishimuraya stands on its main street, a few minutes from the first of the seven bathhouses.
At the door: the canal and its bridges, the bathhouses in their own gardens, and the ropeway to the temple of Onsen-ji above the town.

the rooms
The rooms and suites
The rooms are Japanese in the old manner: tatami, lacquered tables, alcoves with a scroll and a single flower, and wide verandas onto the garden. Some carry a bath of their own in fragrant cypress, by a window onto the trees.
On The Classic Cherry Blossom Tour of Japan every room is from the ryokan's upper categories or a suite, never the entry room.
to unwind
The onsen
The ryokan has onsen of its own, among them a round bath set in rock under the trees of its garden. Beyond its door are the seven public bathhouses: one beside a waterfall, one in a cave of rock, one where the town's story says a stork showed the first bathers the spring.
the table
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki of the Sea of Japan and the Tajima hills, Tajima beef among it; on our tours both evenings are at the ryokan.
