Supreme Class is the new top class of the shinkansen between Tokyo and Hakata: a private cabin behind its own locked door, ranked above first class. JR Central and JR West opened it on 1 October 2026, on the N700S trains that run through Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, with one cabin for up to two guests in car 7 and one for a single guest in car 10. The first left Tokyo Station at six that morning as the Nozomi 1, and with it the busiest high-speed line in Japan gained a room of its own.
First class on the shinkansen remains excellent, and most journeys need nothing more. A cabin is another order of travel altogether. For two people going from Tokyo to Kyoto, it is now the seat to want.
the class
What is Supreme Class on the shinkansen?
The two railways announced Supreme Class on 17 June 2026 as the highest class on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, and they gave it an emblem to match: a single curved S inside the outline of a train window, holding Mount Fuji and the sea, in the black and gold of lacquer and maki-e.
It comes in two forms. The Supreme Class Cabin, a fully private room, has run since 1 October. The Supreme Class Seat, a semi-private seat in an enclosure of its own, follows in JR Central's fiscal year 2027.
Each train carries two cabins of different sizes. The larger, in car 7, takes one or two guests, with a sofa facing the seat. The smaller, in car 10, takes one, and differs from its neighbour only in the sofa and a little of the floor.
the cabin
Inside a Supreme Class cabin
The door is the first luxury. It opens to the same IC card or QR code that took the guest through the ticket gate, and it locks itself behind them.
Beyond it is a deep reclining seat with a leg rest, a seat heater and an electric lumbar support that shapes the back of the seat to the person in it, all set from a tablet fixed beneath the window. The same tablet keeps the room: the brightness and colour of the light, the flow of the air, the volume of the train's announcements. It holds four settings, Normal, Business, Relaxation and Sleep, and set to Sleep somewhere past Nagoya, the cabin dims to an evening hush while the slopes of Mount Ibuki go by at Sekigahara.

Two pieces of engineering keep the cabin's sound and signal its own. A speaker in the headrest pairs with a telephone or tablet by Bluetooth and uses NTT's Personalized Sound Zone technology to hold a film or a call close around the listener's head; JR calls it a first on public transport in Japan. And the cabin runs its own Wi-Fi, without a time limit, through a 5G antenna of transparent glass developed by AGC, which JR says is the first fitted to a railway vehicle anywhere in the world.
The rest is the furniture of a good room. A large table for lunch or for work. A hanger for a coat. Power outlets, USB-A and USB-C. And space beside the seat for a case of airline carry-on size, up to 55 by 40 by 25 centimetres.
Then the ornament. Each cabin carries a framed piece of craft from the country along the line. On JR Central's trains the frame is made from the recycled aluminium of retired shinkansen and holds Mino ware, the ceramics of Gifu; on JR West's the pieces are textiles, Hakata-ori silk from Fukuoka and Banshu-ori cotton from Hyogo among them. A train that once crossed Japan becomes the frame for a piece of the Japan it crossed.
the choice
Car 7 or car 10: which cabin, and which way it faces
For two, car 7, without hesitation. The seat faces west towards Hakata and the sofa faces east towards Tokyo, so the pair sit across the table from each other the whole way, as they would in a private dining room.
Neither seat turns, and that is the one thing to know before booking. On the way to Kyoto the sofa rides backwards, so whichever of the two minds it takes the seat. The single cabin in car 10 faces Tokyo: it travels backwards all the way west, and forwards all the way home. A traveller alone going west is often happier forwards in first class, and saves car 10 for the return.
the trains
Which trains carry Supreme Class
The cabins are fitted to the 16-car N700S, the newest train on the line, and JR Central is bringing them into service set by set. In October 2026 about a dozen trains a day carry them, counting both directions: Nozomi services the length of the line from Tokyo to Hakata, a Hikari between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, and a Kodama between Tokyo and Nagoya. The Nozomi 15 leaves Tokyo at 8.12 in the morning and reaches Kyoto at 10.23, a little over two hours.
The timetable JR Central published for October, by train, with the times at Tokyo and Kyoto. Leaving Tokyo:
- Nozomi 15: Tokyo 8.12am, Kyoto 10.23am, on to Hakata
- Nozomi 35: Tokyo 1.12pm, Kyoto 3.23pm, on to Hakata
- Nozomi 45: Tokyo 3.30pm, Kyoto 5.44pm, on to Hakata
- Nozomi 59: Tokyo 6.51pm, Kyoto 9.06pm, on to Hakata
- Hikari 633: Tokyo 7.36am to Shin-Osaka, 10.27am
- Kodama 833: Tokyo 2.27pm to Nagoya, 5.06pm
Returning to Tokyo:
- Nozomi 10: from Hakata, Kyoto 10.45am, Tokyo 12.57pm
- Nozomi 20: from Hakata, Kyoto 1.01pm, Tokyo 3.15pm
- Nozomi 34: from Hakata, Kyoto 4.22pm, Tokyo 6.33pm
- Nozomi 62: from Hakata, Kyoto 9.21pm, Tokyo 11.32pm
- Hikari 648: Shin-Osaka 11.18am to Tokyo, 2.12pm
- Kodama 854: Nagoya 8.46pm to Tokyo, 11.24pm
Two cabins on each of a dozen trains makes about two dozen cabins a day on the whole of the line, and some of those trains are announced only on the day of travel. That arithmetic is the reason a cabin is planned together with the train, never after it.
the comparison
Supreme Class or first class?
First class on the Tokaido Shinkansen is an open carriage of seats laid out two and two, with 1,160 millimetres between the rows, the hush of a library, and coffee ordered to the seat by QR code. It is the right ticket for nearly every journey.
Supreme Class changes the nature of the journey, not only its comfort. Walls and a locked door instead of a carriage of neighbours. A room to dim, warm or turn into an office, with its own network. On the Nozomi and the Hikari a welcome drink and a confection arrive after departure, and the tablet orders from a short list of things made along the line, a sake brewed for Supreme Class alone, a green tea from the Makinohara plateau in Shizuoka and, between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, scallops from Hokkaido, which the purser brings to the door. The all-stations Kodama carries the cabins without the service.

the fare
Supreme Class fares, from Tokyo to Hakata
JR Central publishes the fares adult, one way, by Nozomi at the regular season, through its Smart EX service. The first figure is the cabin for two in car 7, the second the cabin for one in car 10:
- Tokyo to Nagoya: 47,060 yen and 32,660 yen
- Tokyo to Shin-Osaka: 60,790 yen and 42,390 yen
- Tokyo to Okayama: 74,440 yen and 51,840 yen
- Tokyo to Hiroshima: 86,620 yen and 60,020 yen
- Shin-Osaka to Hakata: 72,690 yen and 50,090 yen
The fare for car 7 is the fare of the guest who books it. A companion sharing the cabin needs only a ticket of any class for the same train, ordinary or first, and a child aged six or under needs none. Two sharing car 7 therefore come to less each than one alone in car 10.
Is it worth it? For a couple between Tokyo and Kyoto, yes. Two hours in a room of their own, talking across a table, arriving rested and unobserved, is the most civilised way there is between Japan's two great capitals.
the booking
How to book Supreme Class
Supreme Class is sold only online, through JR Central's Smart EX and Express Reserve services, to members; JR Central's English site sends visitors to Smart EX. No station ticket office sells it, and there is no paper ticket: the guest boards with a registered IC card or a QR code, and the same card or code opens the cabin.
Cabins go on sale at ten in the morning one month before the day of travel, or from 5.30 on the day itself for a train confirmed that morning. There are no early-booking fares. On a journey that changes trains, Supreme Class connects only with Supreme Class or with an unreserved ordinary seat, never with first class on the other leg. An unsold cabin may be sold on board, a pleasant surprise and never a plan.
the journey
Tokyo to Kyoto by Supreme Class, done properly
The journey begins the evening before, at the front desk of a Tokyo hotel, when the suitcases leave for Kyoto by takuhaibin, Japan's door-to-door forwarding service, to be waiting in the room on arrival. On the morning itself, nobody carries anything heavier than a coat.
A private car sets the party down at the station. There is no ticket to collect and no window to queue at; the walk runs from the car, through the gate, to the platform marker for car 7. Lunch is on the table before the train moves: a lacquered box made to order by a Tokyo kitchen, wagashi from an old confectioner, a melon cut and boxed like jewellery by a Ginza fruit parlour, and for those who take a glass at lunch, a junmai daiginjo poured cold.
About forty minutes out of Tokyo, between Shin-Fuji and Shizuoka, Mount Fuji stands on the right of the train. The purser brings the welcome drink and a sweet. Past Shizuoka the tea fields fall away to the long water of Lake Hamana, and the two travellers inside have not seen another passenger since Tokyo.
At Kyoto the door unlocks to the same card, the Tour Director is waiting on the platform, and a car stands outside the station. The guests arrive the way they left Tokyo: rested, hands free, with the afternoon ahead of them.
This is the day the Custom Tour of Japan designs for a party travelling privately, every leg chosen for them alone. With so few cabins on the line, a cabin is promised only once the train and the cabin are secured; on a day without one, the same journey runs in first class.
the seat
Supreme Class Seat, arriving in 2027
The second form of Supreme Class is due in JR Central's fiscal year 2027, which runs from April 2027 to March 2028. Six Supreme Class Seats will take the place of five rows of first class at the Tokyo end of car 10: large seats inside high back shells, each behind an electronic-lock door between the aisle and the seat, with the leg rest, the table and the tablet of the cabins.

Unlike the cabins, the Seats turn, so two can face each other across the aisle, a semi-private table for two in the middle of the train. JR Central has not yet announced the fare or the day the Seat goes on sale.

How Luxury Japan Travel's guests ride the shinkansen
Every journey of The Private Collection crosses the country in first class, and so do the published tours. A private chauffeur meets the flight, the luggage goes ahead between hotels, and the guests step onto the train with nothing heavier than a book. For a couple who want the run from Tokyo to Kyoto entirely to themselves, the Custom Tour of Japan builds the day around the cabin in car 7.
questions
Questions
What is Supreme Class on the shinkansen?
Supreme Class is the new top class of the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, above first class, introduced by JR Central and JR West on 1 October 2026. It began with private cabins behind electronic-lock doors in cars 7 and 10 of the N700S, between Tokyo and Hakata.
Does the shinkansen have private cabins?
Yes. Since 1 October 2026 each N700S train fitted for Supreme Class carries two private cabins: one in car 7 for up to two guests, with a sofa facing the seat, and one in car 10 for one guest. The door opens to the guest's IC card or QR code and locks itself.
How much does a Supreme Class cabin cost?
From Tokyo to Shin-Osaka by Nozomi, JR Central's published adult one-way fare through Smart EX at the regular season is 60,790 yen for the cabin in car 7 and 42,390 yen for car 10. A companion in car 7 needs a ticket of any class for the same train.
How do you book Supreme Class?
Online only, through JR Central's Smart EX or Express Reserve, which require membership, from 10am one month before the day of travel. It is not sold at station ticket offices; the guest boards with an IC card or QR code, which also opens the cabin.
Which trains have Supreme Class?
The 16-car N700S trains fitted for it, introduced set by set. In October 2026 about a dozen Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama services a day carry it, counting both directions, and JR Central lists the day's trains on its website; some are announced on the day.
Can two people share a Supreme Class cabin?
Yes, in car 7, where the seat faces a sofa across a table. The guest who books pays the Supreme Class fare and the companion travels on any ticket for the same train. The cabin in car 10 is for one guest.
Do Supreme Class seats face forwards?
The cabin seats do not turn. In car 7 the seat faces Hakata and the sofa faces Tokyo, so going west the sofa rides backwards; the single seat in car 10 faces Tokyo, backwards going west and forwards going east.
When does the Supreme Class Seat start?
In JR Central's fiscal year 2027, between April 2027 and March 2028. Six back-shell seats, each behind its own door and able to turn, will replace five rows of first class in car 10; the fare and sale date are still to be announced.
