the room
The rooms
The rooms are Japanese in the main, on tatami with a flower in the alcove, looking to the mountain forest; there are Japanese and Western rooms and Western rooms besides. The Japanese rooms with an open-air bath, and the Keigetsu Suite with a living room and a bath of rock, look onto the greenery at the foot of the forest; by the rule of Kinosaki those baths carry heated water, and the spring itself is kept for the onsen.
to unwind
The onsen and the spa
The onsen draws a sodium and calcium chloride spring into indoor and open-air pools surrounded by the forest, with cold plunges and saunas, among them a sauna of fragrant cypress, and a lounge in the manner of a tea house for a cold drink after. Three private onsen can be reserved, in Japanese, Balinese and Chinese styles, and a relaxation salon offers aroma massage.
the table
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki of the Tajima country, Tajima beef, Tajima rice and the fish of the Sea of Japan among it, with local sake, served in the room or in a private dining room; on our journeys both evenings' dinners are at the ryokan.
the setting
Kinosaki Onsen
Kinosaki is the onsen town of willows and stone bridges on the Sea of Japan coast of Hyogo, and the ryokan stands on its edge, where the town meets the mountain forest. The lobby lounge looks onto the green and a waterfall, and a trail leads up into the Japanese garden.
A trail winds through the forest garden, and below lies the town, with its willow canal and the seven public onsen along it.
