When to Book a Cherry Blossom Trip to Japan for 2027

Japan's spring is booked on Japan's calendar: hotels and ryokan open their rooms a year ahead, airlines about 355 days out, the shinkansen a month before. Here is how that calendar falls for the spring of 2027.

For a cherry blossom trip to Japan in late March or early April 2027, the rooms are the first thing to settle, and most of the best of them open about a year ahead. Many of the great hotels and ryokan of Japan open their rooms a year before the night, some eighteen months before. Airlines follow: ANA releases seats 355 days before departure and JAL 360, so flights for 30 March 2027 went on sale in April 2026. The shinkansen comes last, with reserved seats released at ten in the morning one month before the day of travel. Everything in between is the order in which a spring journey through Japan is put together.

the rooms

Hotels and ryokan for cherry blossom season

Kyoto decides the calendar. In April 2026 the city's hotels ran at 85.1 per cent occupancy, at an average room rate of 31,296 yen, the highest the Kyoto City Tourism Association has recorded since its survey began in 2014; March was not far behind, at 81.6 per cent. Those are averages across 117 hotels of every kind. At the top of the market, where the hotels have a few dozen rooms and the ryokan a dozen, the first week of April is spoken for long before the forecasts appear.

Ryokan work on their own rhythm, and each sets its own. Many of the great inns open a date a year ahead to the day, at a fixed hour in the morning Japan time. The rooms worth having in a spring week are the ones with the garden or the river outside the window, and in an inn of a dozen rooms there are only a few of those.

So the hotels come first, before the flights. A spring itinerary in Japan is built around the nights that are hardest to find, which is why three nights in Kyoto in the first week of April set the shape of the whole trip.

One change for 2027 belongs in every Kyoto booking. From 1 March 2026 the city's accommodation tax rose sharply at the top of the market: a room charged at 100,000 yen or more a night now carries 10,000 yen of tax for each guest, each night, against 1,000 yen before, with lower bands of 4,000, 1,000, 400 and 200 yen below it. It is collected by the hotel on top of the room rate.

the flights

Flights to Japan for the spring of 2027

Japan's two flag carriers open their schedules almost a year out. JAL has sold seats 360 days before departure since April 2019; ANA releases them 355 days ahead, at nine in the morning Japan time. For a flight landing in Tokyo on 30 March 2027, that put the first seats on sale in early April 2026.

March is now among the busiest months of the year for arrivals. Japan received 3,618,900 visitors in March 2026, and the first quarter of the year passed ten million for the first time. Business and first-class seats on the long routes from Sydney, Los Angeles, New York and London are the seats that go first, and in 2027 Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, two days before the season's first week opens in Tokyo. Haneda is the airport to land at where the route allows: it sits on the bay about half an hour by car from central Tokyo, where Narita is closer to an hour and a half, and on the first evening of a long journey that hour matters.

the calendar

Where spring 2027 falls in Japan's own calendar

The Japanese school and fiscal year both begin in April, so the last days of March and the first of April are when the country itself travels: schools are on their spring break, companies welcome new staff, and families take the train to see the blossom in another city. In 2027, 30 March falls on a Tuesday and the first weekend of the season on 3 and 4 April, when the parks of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are at their fullest.

Those who follow the season north meet the other great holiday. Golden Week in 2027 gathers Showa Day on Thursday 29 April and the three holidays of 3, 4 and 5 May, the week the cherry trees open in Hakodate and Sapporo. Hokkaido's rooms for those dates are booked on the same year-ahead calendar as Kyoto's in April.

the trains

Shinkansen tickets: one month ahead

The shinkansen is the one part of the spring that waits until the last month. Reserved seats on the Tokaido line between Tokyo and Kyoto go on sale at ten in the morning one month before the day of travel, and JR Central's own online service takes requests up to a year ahead and confirms them when that window opens. In the first week of April, the first-class Green Car seats on the morning trains west are the ones to have the moment they appear.

The luggage goes separately. Japan's forwarding services carry a suitcase from one hotel to the next overnight, booked at the front desk the evening before, and a spring itinerary that uses them moves through the country without a trolley in sight.

the tours

Cherry blossom tours: the spring departures go first

Group tours of Japan publish their spring dates a year or more ahead, and the spring departures are the first to fill.

A small group fills in a different way. With eight places on a departure, the date is decided by the first four couples to confirm, and a tour of that size names every hotel on its first page. Booking a small-group tour in the autumn before the spring is the same decision as booking the hotels a year ahead, with the rest of the journey left to the people who run it.

what can wait

What can wait until the new year

The forecasts themselves. The Japan Meteorological Corporation issued its first forecast for the 2026 season on 18 December 2025, and Weathernews states that its 2027 coverage begins in February. The long-run normals they refine are steady: Tokyo's full bloom falls around 31 March and Kyoto's around 4 April on the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 record. A spring trip is planned on those normals and the rooms are chosen on them; the forecasts, when they come, settle which morning to spend at which garden.

The train seats wait until a month out. Everything else is better settled in the autumn before.
