The rooms
The rooms average fifty square metres, in a refined modern Japanese manner, with views over the river or the hills. The Garden Terrace Suites open through floor-to-ceiling glass onto a private Japanese garden and a terrace deck of their own, and Suite Tsukimi carries an outdoor moon-viewing deck and a garden lit by old lanterns, facing Daimonji across the city.

The pool and the spa
The spa keeps seven treatment rooms, a private spa suite among them, around a gentle waterfall, with a relaxation room where matcha is served. A heated 20-metre indoor pool, a steam room and a dry sauna sit beside it. The hotel has no onsen.

Dining
The Japanese dining rooms each keep to one art: a kaiseki of Kyoto, Edomae sushi at an eleven-metre counter dressed in Wajima lacquer, tempura of the season's vegetables and seafood, and teppanyaki of lobster and Japanese beef from an open kitchen. The Italian dining room is panelled in wood and laid with tatami, and the lobby lounge serves afternoon tea among works by Japanese artists.
the setting
Kyoto
The hotel lies on the west bank of the Kamo River, by the Nijo Ohashi bridge, where the river path runs north and south through the city and the Higashiyama hills rise beyond the far bank. Check-in is taken over Japanese tea, and more than four hundred works of modern Japanese art hang through the hotel.
The path along the Kamo River passes the door, Pontocho and the arcades of Teramachi are a short walk south, and Gion lies across the river.
