the room
The rooms
The rooms begin at sixty square metres and are made in the spare manner of a ryokan, in natural materials, with light-filled windows onto the woods. The Kaede rooms face west to the maples and the forest, the Nara rooms are wrapped in woodland, and the Susuki rooms face east to the morning light, some with a terrace. The Takagamine Suite adds a tatami room, and the two-bedroom pavilions stand apart: one at the highest point of the garden, one looking east over all of it.
to unwind
The onsen and the spa
The spa keeps indoor and outdoor onsen on mineral-rich spring water that rises near the resort, with bathing by reservation so that only a few guests share it at a time. Three treatment rooms use Kyoto green tea, Tamba black beans, sake of the region and cold-pressed camellia oil, and yoga and meditation take place in the garden.
the table
Dining
A Japanese counter serves a tasting menu of the day's ingredients, the chefs working behind the wood in front of you, and a pavilion with a central fire and a terrace on the garden serves Western dishes drawn from the Kyoto table. Breakfast is Japanese: obanzai, the home cooking of Kyoto, fermented dishes, and rice cooked in a clay pot with wagyu or grilled fish. Matcha and sweets are served each afternoon in the tea house.
the setting
Kyoto
Takagamine is the quiet northern edge of Kyoto, where the city gives way to wooded hills. The resort lies at the foot of Hidari Daimonji, the mountain where the great character of the Daimonji fire is lit, inside a garden set in the forest, about thirty minutes by car from Kyoto Station.
The hills of Takagamine rise behind the resort, and Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji and Daitoku-ji are each a short drive away.
