the room
The rooms
The nine suites run from forty to eighty square metres, each built round one material: washi paper, porcelain, lacquer, stone, bamboo, silk, cypress or crystal. They are laid with tatami and hand-woven carpets, behind shoji screens, with king beds, twins or futon, and most carry a hinoki tub. Every suite has a private balcony over the Shirakawa.

The bath
The bathing is in the suites: deep tubs of hinoki cypress in most of them, the wood scenting the room, with the canal outside. The hotel has no onsen or spa.
the table
Dining
The restaurant cooks in a French manner with American and Asian influences, built on the produce of the region, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The riverside terrace serves breakfast, afternoon tea and an aperitif over the Shirakawa, and the bar pours Japanese teas and a coffee blended for the hotel after dinner.
the setting
Kyoto
Shinmonzen Street runs through the preserved quarter of Gion Shirakawa, lined with dealers in antiques, prints and fine art. The hotel stands on it behind a modest front in the manner of a machiya, with the Shirakawa flowing at its back; a terrace on the water serves breakfast, tea and an aperitif before dinner, and contemporary art and ceramics hang inside.
The willows and stone paths of the Shirakawa run beneath the suites, and the teahouse lanes of Gion and Hanamikoji, the Kamo River and Yasaka Shrine are all a short walk away.
