The rooms
The 29 rooms run from 55 to 104 square metres in five kinds, revealed one turn at a time as in a townhouse: wooden lattices divide the bedroom from the living space, walls are covered in lead or washi, and the Deluxe rooms keep box gardens made by a Kyoto potter. The Junior Suites are lit softly through shoji, and The Hiramatsu Suite is panelled in walnut.

The bath
The bathing is in the rooms, each with a jet bath. The hotel has no onsen or spa.

Dining
The Italian dining room seats 28 and looks onto the bamboo garden and the old kura storehouse; the Japanese dining room is a counter of a single zelkova plank, with the seasons cooked before you. Breakfast is a kaiseki-style Japanese set of locally grown vegetables, or a continental table, and the Japanese kitchen sends light dishes such as soba to the rooms in the evening.
the setting
Kyoto
Muromachi-dori was the street of the kimono trade in central Kyoto, and the hotel occupies a machiya of the Meiji era that was a draper's home and shop. A Kyoto firm of sukiya builders restored its interiors and gardens in wood, earth and paper: a pine garden at the arrival, a bamboo garden before the dining rooms, and small box gardens in some rooms.
The Museum of Kyoto and Nishiki Market are a short walk away, and Nijo Castle and the park of the Kyoto Imperial Palace a short ride.
