The rooms
The 70 rooms and suites are made with Kyoto craftsmanship and natural materials, fragrant tamo wood among them, and hung with original art; many look onto the gardens, and some over the pagoda and the city.
to unwind
The spa
The spa keeps a treatment suite for two with its own bathhouse of Japanese-style tubs, with dry and mist saunas, and its signature treatments use green tea grown in the region.
the table
Dining
The hotel keeps a bistro of international and Japanese dishes served on handmade pottery, a living room for Japanese breakfast and tea, a teppanyaki counter facing the Yasaka pagoda, and a bar over the city pouring rare spirits with whisky, sake and gin made in Kyoto. A ryotei serving Kyoto kaiseki, in business since 1877, keeps a dining room within the grounds.
the setting
Kyoto
The hotel stands on the hillside of Higashiyama, one of the best-kept historic quarters of Kyoto, next to the temple of Kodai-ji and above the stone steps of Ninenzaka. It is built low, around a restored Japanese garden and several older buildings, among them a teahouse of the Edo period.
Kodai-ji is beside the hotel and the Yasaka pagoda below it, and the stone lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka climb to Kiyomizu-dera at the top of the slope.
