the room

The rooms

The rooms draw on contemporary Japan: crafted bamboo floors, Japanese fabrics made for the rooms in golds and warm oranges, lampshades of washi modelled on the andon, and lighting of fine bamboo strings made by a Japanese craftsman. Every bathroom is in marble, with a deep soaking tub and a walk-in shower.

The suites, on the upper floors, add living rooms behind floor-to-ceiling windows, and the largest is designed after the parks of Tokyo, its bedroom ceiling read like the sky seen through leaves.

The spa

The spa is on the 37th floor, with four treatment rooms and five treatment suites whose tall windows look over Tokyo to the mountains on the horizon, a vitality pool and water lounges, and a fitness centre on the 38th floor. Its treatments draw on Eastern traditions of massage and care.

Dining

Dining takes up much of the hotel: a French dining room for fine dining, a counter for sushi, Cantonese cooking, an Italian kitchen with a brick oven, international dishes in a light-filled room, a bar, and a lounge for afternoon tea, with the skyline behind much of it.

the setting

Tokyo

Nihonbashi was the merchant centre of Edo, and its department stores and shops of the old trades still line the streets below. Mandarin Oriental Tokyo occupies the upper floors of the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, so the city opens out from every window.

The department stores and merchant streets of Nihonbashi are at the foot of the tower, and Ginza is a short drive away.
