Asaba

The rooms

The ten rooms run from 52 to 220 square metres, most between 71 and 152, laid in tatami in the old way, some with a bedroom; the largest is a detached villa. Several look across the pond to the Noh stage and the others onto the garden, and every one carries an onsen of the spring, some half open to the air and some fully in the open.

The onsen

The open-air onsen sits in a grove of bamboo, the wind moving through the stems, and its water is the Shuzenji spring, running straight from the source without recirculation. Every room adds an onsen of its own on the same spring.

Dining

Dinner is a kaiseki of Izu, built with suppliers the ryokan has worked with for generations: fish from Suruga Bay, abalone, spiny lobster, kinmedai over charcoal, and wagyu grilled on the coals. Breakfast is served in the room, with the ryokan's own wind-dried fish and a rolled omelette made to order.

the setting

Izu Peninsula

Shuzenji is an onsen village in the hills at the centre of the Izu Peninsula, along the Katsura River and around the temple of Shuzen-ji. The ryokan stands in the village, its rooms and its Noh stage arranged around a pond, with a grove of bamboo behind the open-air onsen.

The temple of Shuzen-ji stands across the village, and a bamboo path follows the Katsura River through its lanes.
