ESPACIO The Hakone Geihinkan Rin-Poh-Ki-Ryu is a ryokan of nine villas in a forested river valley below Miyanoshita in Hakone, reached by a private cable car and opened in 2024, each villa with its own onsen on the Dogashima spring, one of the Seven Hot Springs of Hakone.

The rooms
The nine villas run from 92 to 385 square metres, with one or two bedrooms, and each has onsen indoors and in the open air. Most add a sauna; one carries a tea ceremony room, a sunken kotatsu and a view down the river valley; and the largest, on three levels, adds a plunge pool and a hot stone bath. Their walls and screens are the work of Japanese craftspeople, in kumiko, washi, karakami, lacquer and plaster.

The onsen
The ryokan keeps the source of the Dogashima spring, one of the Seven Hot Springs of Hakone, first opened in the fourteenth century, and its water runs to an onsen indoors and another in the open air in every villa, the river below and the forest close.

Dining
Dinner is served in the villa, in the tradition of Kyoto cuisine and cha-kaiseki, with the produce of Hakone, kaiseki or a nabe hotpot, and sake chosen to each course and to the tableware. Breakfast is Japanese, made in the old way.

Hakone
Miyanoshita is the old onsen village on the slopes of Hakone, above the valley of the Haya River. The villas lie a hundred metres below it, down a private cable car through the forest, with nothing near them but the trees and the sound of the river.
The Haya River runs through the valley forest below the villas, and the village of Miyanoshita is a few minutes above.
