the room

The rooms

The villas are Japanese or Western in style, each with a living room and a bedroom, tatami and futon in the Japanese villas and beds in the Western, and some with a further room of seven tatami for a family. Cotton pyjamas, linen work clothes and fleece-lined haori are laid out for the stay, and the windows look out unhindered over forest and mountain.

The onsen

The ryokan's spring is a sodium bicarbonate chloride water, rich in metasilicic acid and soft on the skin. It rises from about a thousand metres down and flows straight into each villa's two onsen: a spacious one indoors, and one outdoors in cypress or hand-carved stone, with the scent of the forest around it.

the table

Dining

Dinner is a northern kaiseki, its ingredients chosen with the growers and fishermen of Hokkaido and served on hand-made ceramics in a quiet dining room; guests staying four nights or more may dine at an irori hearth in a room of their own. Breakfast is Japanese, with milk tofu, Hokkaido fish and miso soup, or Western if preferred. Beyond the table are a lounge with a fire facing Mount Yotei, a bar, a library and a tea room.

the setting

Niseko

The ryokan stands in a forest of white birch in Hanazono, on the Kutchan side of Niseko, its villas looking over the Hanazono pastures to Mount Yotei, the cone called Ezo Fuji, and round to Niseko Annupuri. Each villa takes its name from a different crystal of snow.

A pond lies before the lounge in the birch forest, the green pastures of Hanazono open beyond it, and the lifts of Hanazono are about seven minutes by car.
