The rooms

The rooms and suites are generous, with living and dining space and windows from floor to ceiling onto the mountains. The studios, of 35 to 40 square metres, carry a king bed and a kitchenette; the residences of 65 square metres and the suites of 81 add a separate living room, a dining table for four, a walk-in wardrobe and a soaking tub.

Many of the suites, residences and penthouses have an onsen of their own, and the signature suites pair theirs with views over Mount Yotei. The penthouses, of two and three bedrooms, give a family or a party of friends a home on the mountain, winter or green season.

The onsen and the spa

The hotel's public onsen is filled with mineral-rich spring water, beside a 25-metre pool open all year and a fitness centre. The spa keeps six treatment rooms, two of them couples' suites with a private onsen, and treats with Sisley and with ICOR, Niseko's own natural skincare; its own recommendation is a soak in the suite's onsen followed by a ninety-minute oil treatment, in complete privacy.

Dining

The hotel's tables run from French cooking by a three-Michelin-starred chef, built on the sea and the soil of Hokkaido, to a sushi counter where a Michelin-starred owner-chef from Kanazawa serves fish from the Omicho market on Ohi-yaki plates. Teppan counters cook Wagyu, abalone and Hokkaido vegetables before you in the Japanese or the French manner, a robata grill works over charcoal, and there are Cantonese and Sichuan rooms and an Italian kitchen that makes its pasta by hand.

The lounge is the heart of the hotel, gathered round its fireplace and facing Mount Yotei, with Pierre Hermé afternoon tea and Hokkaido cooking through the day. The bar pours whisky, local gins and Hokkaido craft beer beside a cigar room.

the setting

Niseko

The hotel stands at the base of Niseko Hanazono Resort, in the town of Kutchan, with the Annupuri ranges above it and Mount Yotei across the valley, framed by the tall windows of the lobby. In winter the runs come down from Mount Annupuri to Hanazono and on to the door, through the deep, dry powder Niseko is known for.

In winter the slopes of Hanazono begin at the door; in the green season the eighteen holes of Hanazono Golf run through birch forest beside a spring-water creek, with Mount Yotei in view.
