Ryokan, Niseko

Shiguchi

Shiguchi is a ryokan of five rooms in Hanazono, Niseko, made from three farmhouses some 150 years old that were taken down in Honshu and raised again here, every room with an outdoor onsen of its own, filled with spring water that is neither filtered nor heated.

Stay at Shiguchi on a Custom Tour of Japan, created around your party alone, on the dates you choose.

the room

The rooms

Each farmhouse has one or two rooms, with a king bed below, a tatami room in the loft under the old beams, a living room and a kitchen, and an outdoor onsen carved from stone. The largest, Fu, runs to 247 square metres, and Ka is a whole farmhouse of two bedrooms for a party of up to six; Chi and Sui look over the gorge, and the others over forest to the mountains beyond.

The onsen

The spring water reaches every room as it leaves the ground, unfiltered and unheated, and fills an outdoor onsen carved from stone, there for the room at any hour of the day or night.

Dining

Dinner is a course menu that draws on the food of the Ainu and of the Jomon, cooked with vegetables from the ryokan's own garden and the produce of Niseko, and served in the neighbouring farmhouse, indoors or on a terrace over the valley and the mountains; from the second night it can be brought to the room. Hokkaido wines, local craft beer and whisky are poured with it.

the setting

Niseko

The farmhouses stand in Hanazono, within the Niseko Shakotan Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park, gathered together like the inns of an old post town above a gorge and among forest. Craftsmen took them down in Honshu and rebuilt them here, mending the joints of the beams with lead in the spirit of kintsugi and turning reclaimed timber into walls and shelves.

Forest and a small gorge lie below the rooms, the dining room and a gallery of antiques and folk art fill a neighbouring farmhouse, and the slopes of Niseko are a short drive away.
