the room
The rooms
The eleven suites come in three kinds: eight deluxe suites of 56 square metres, two larger suites of 62, and one Roka suite of 106. They are laid with tatami, low furniture and indirect light, with cypress trim and soft greys in the fabrics, and the beds are futon. The deluxe suites have a semi-outdoor cypress bath of 2.5 square metres and a balcony over the garden.
to unwind
The bath
The baths are the suites' own: deep tubs of cypress open to the air, filled with fresh water rather than spring water, the scent of the wood and the tatami through the rooms. The ryokan also makes more than a hundred herbal infusions of its own.
the table
Dining
The dining room, with tables and a counter for thirty-seven, serves modern kaiseki and sushi in courses at lunch and dinner, on the fish of the season and the vegetables of Setouchi, with a vegan menu beside; breakfast is included. A café-bar serves lunch and stays open well into the evening.
the setting
Naoshima and the Seto Inland Sea
Naoshima is the island of the Seto Inland Sea known for contemporary art, reached by ferry from Okayama or Takamatsu. The ryokan stands ten minutes on foot from Honmura Port, its suites made of the wood, stone and earth of the Inland Sea and turned to a garden and the island's green.
Honmura, the old village of Naoshima with its art houses and its port, is a short walk away.
