the room

The rooms

The rooms are in four buildings. The Museum keeps its rooms among the galleries, from twins of 27 square metres to suites of 70, with large windows to the sea and works from the collection in each. The Oval has six rooms on the hilltop with floor-to-ceiling glass over the Inland Sea.

The Park, a building of wood on a gentle slope, has forty-one rooms, all facing the sea and the outdoor works. The Beach has eight suites of 61 square metres beside the water, each with a balcony, the rooms closest to the shore.

to unwind

The spa

The spa stands beside the Park, with two works of contemporary art among its rooms, and each treatment is shaped with the therapist before it begins. In the deluxe rooms of the Museum, the bathroom itself looks out over the sea.

the table

Dining

Every table keeps the Inland Sea in view. A Japanese dining room on the lower floor of the museum serves a kaiseki of Setouchi fish among works of art; a French dining room beside the Park has high ceilings and tall windows to the sea; a counter of eight seats serves sushi over the water; and the museum café takes the light from the south and west. A lounge beneath the Park serves cocktails of its own.

the setting

Naoshima and the Seto Inland Sea

Naoshima is a small island of the Seto Inland Sea, known for its contemporary art. Benesse House stands on high ground at the edge of the water: the museum, made so that nature, architecture and art live together, opens to the sea through wide apertures, and works of art are placed along the shore and in the forest around it.

Works of art stand on the beach and along the forest paths, the galleries open beside the rooms, and the Inland Sea stretches away to the mountains of Shikoku.
