The rooms

The 84 rooms are arranged six to a floor, each floor with its ochanoma, a lounge for its own guests, joined to the rooms by a tatami corridor. The ochanoma sets out sencha with a seasonal sweet in the afternoon, a seasonal drink in the evening after the onsen, and Edo washi in the morning for writing a letter. The classical pattern of the facade lies over the windows, so the light in the rooms shifts with the hour.

The onsen

Otemachi Onsen springs from 1,500 metres below the city, from ground where the sea once spread, an iodine and sodium chloride spring rich in the minerals of seawater. Indoors it fills a dim, cavernous hall; on the top floor it opens to the air, with the clouds and the evening colour of the Tokyo sky above. It is kept for guests of the ryokan.

Dining

The dining room lies in the basement, reached down a corridor like a narrow lane, its wall built up in layers of earth and its entrance faced in stone after the moats of Edo Castle. Dinner brings the ingredients of Japan to French technique at tables set on tatami, a counter serves Edomae sushi, and meals can also be taken in the room.

the setting

Tokyo

Otemachi takes its name from the Otemon, the main gate of Edo Castle, and Hoshinoya Tokyo stands before it among the towers of the financial district. From a distance the building looks black; close to, it is wrapped in a fine lattice of classical patterns, its corners curved like stacked lacquer boxes, and at night the light glows through the pattern.

The Otemon gate and the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace are a short walk away, and Tokyo Station ten minutes on foot.
